Nature inspired reflections for those healing from abuse and trauma (by a guest writer)
The other day I was sitting on the deck of my porch trying to relax and enjoy the last days of summer. As I sat and reflected on past losses, the passing of the seasons and the ongoing march of time, a hummingbird zoomed into view. I watched as he hovered over the water fountain he had been magically drawn to visit. He was so tiny yet vibrantly beautiful. My thoughts quieted and I lost myself in the moment with this creature. He dove in for water and flitted around the fountain in delight. All too soon he buzzed away but I was left with a sense of appreciation and peacefulness.
There’s something important here to remember whether you are just beginning to start healing from abuse and trauma or simply need healing reminders in your recovery journey. We can turn to nature for help. Nature can help to remind us to appreciate the unexpected beauty around us. It can comfort and inspire us in our journey.
Recovering and healing from abuse and trauma is an ongoing process. The next time you are feeling overwhelmed, sad, angry or stressed, consider turning to nature to restore your sense of balance and renew your healing energy.
Here are a few ideas for inspiration:
- Take a quiet walk in a natural setting such as a park or botanical garden
- Spend an hour by the lake just enjoying the beauty of your surroundings
- Go on a day hike and bring your camera
- Eliminate all other distractions and watch a peaceful nature video (not all of us have a lake or park nearby!)
The key points are to be in a mindset of appreciation, reflection and awareness of your surroundings. Let nature heal. And it will. It’s where I’ve always found my greatest inspiration and strength.
