Clients as opposed to Consumers

August 23, 2014

Having worked in the mental health field for many years, I am offended by the term consumer as opposed to client.  It is a capitalistic view of mental health and conjures up “the buying public.”  Currently I have a therapist who sees me as her client and so do I.  I am in grad. school and working towards an LMFT/LPCC as a therapist and I will never use the word consumer.  It is an outdated word and thoroughly degrading to the person involved.  8/23/2014
