Self-care for Trauma Survivors

Based on my healing and other trauma survivors, the following are suggestions for continuing self-care.  These suggestions may work for you,  and may not work for others.  During my intense healing periods, it was so important for me to love myself where I was at and to know that the hard times will end and I will come out of the healing a much more centered, loving human being, which I am.

  • Sufficient sleep
  • Healthy eating and drinking water
  • Gentle exercise and stretching
  • Being present in my body
  • Meditation
  • Ask for help
  • Therapy
  • Supportive friends
  • 12 Step recovery programs
  • Websites which provide support and encouragement
  • Grounding techniques
  • Listening to feelings
  • Practice discernment
  • Crisis helplines
  • Learn to distinguish beliefs from childhood carried over to the present
  • Learn who is safe and who is not
  • Have fun and leisure time
  • Set boundaries/limits with others
  • Keep a journal
  • Let go of abusive friends
